Admission Criteria for Telecommunications

  • Location: PTEC Clearwater Campus
  • Scheduled: Full-time program - 7:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday

Admission Criteria

  • Age required = 16 years minimum; not currently enrolled in high school
  • Submit completed Application Form
  • Take a TABE assessment
  • Program full-day shadowing recommended; available Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday;
  • hours 7:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
  • Review and verify that you are able to comply with all program essential functions
  • Verify that you are available for employment in related field upon completion of program

Program Information

  • High school diploma or GED required by a majority of employers
  • Financial assistance available
  • Meet all literacy requirements as measured by TABE—Reading 9.0, Math 9.0,
  • Language 9.0 by the end of Occupational Completion Point C (600 hours)
  • Maintain 80 percent for qualitative and quantitative components on grade reports to meet
  • satisfactory progress standards
  • Literacy requirements must be met for certificate of program completion
  • Number of annual openings in Tampa Bay area: 68
  • Completion and Placement rates N/A

  • Average hourly wages --$11.72 (Starting)

Payments Required at the Bookstore:

  • Pay a $15 non-refundable application processing fee
  • Pay a $50 advanced deposit to hold a seat in the program
  • Pay the tuition and lab fees for one fee period in full 10 days prior to start date
  • Tuition: $429.75 for each 225-hour period
  • Lab fees for this program each enrollment period: $50.00

  • Must have a good driving record
  • No DUI’s or Points
  • Must be able to pass Drug Test
  • Clean Background – No Felony Convictions

  • Math – Grade 9
  • Language - Grade 9
  • Reading - Grade 9

Mental/Cognitive Factors

  • Read and comprehend written and verbal information
  • Ability to see flat blueprints in a 3D form
  • Ability to work on solutions to multiple problems at the same time
  • Work with customers on a professional level

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 plus pounds
  • Climb ladders from 3’ to 30’ high
  • Be able to get around on uneven ground on worksites, climb stairs, ladders, lifts,walk in sand and mud
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard

Technical Skills

  • Know and apply applicable codes and regulations
  • Reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
  • Receives and reviews work orders/requests to determine requirements
  • Plans and schedules job accomplishment
  • Requisition supplies and materials
  • Maintains shop equipment, various activity records, and logs

Tools and Equipment

  • Use of power and hand tools and any machinery of the specialty area
  • Uses volt-ohm meter/ammeter
  • Operates light truck or other motor vehicle

Working Conditions

  • Exposed to outdoor weather
  • Working at heights up to 30 feet
  • Responds to calls for emergency repair
  • Observes and tests malfunctioning unit to determine cause and prescribes corrective action
  • Troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates, repairs, and replaces electronic and electrical devices
  • Install new cable systems
