As part of the Evening of Excellence, the 2011 Hall of Honor inductee will take his place in the Free Enterprise Hall of Honor that recognizes business leaders who have selflessley and tirelessly served their community.  The elementary, middle and high school Business Partners of the Year will also be recognized, and will represent Pinellas County at the annual State Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards

 

2011 Hall of Honor Inductee

Each generation is defined by a handful of exceptional people. They are leaders with high ethical standards and a demonstrated philanthropic spirit. The Pinellas Free Enterprise Hall of Honor is bestowed upon individuals who have been important and successful role models. The award recognizes business leaders who have selflessly and tirelessly served their community.

 Dr. Jack Critchfield 

Each generation is defined by a handful of exceptional people. They are leaders with high ethical standards and a demonstrated philanthropic spirit. The Pinellas Free Enterprise Hall of Honor is bestowed upon individuals who have been important and successful role models.  The award recognizes business leaders who have selflessly and tirelessly served their community.  The Stavros Institute Hall of Honor is itself a legacy, featuring the life story and portrait of each inductee. Dr. Critchfield exemplifies this spirit of this award. As Chairman of the Pinellas Education Foundation, Dr. Critchfield was a founder of the Doorways and Take Stock in Children Scholarship Programs, a co-chairman of Governor Lawton Chiles Commission on Education, a director of the Florida Jobs and Education Partnership, chairman of the Tampa Bay Partnership, and chairman and president of the Industrial Development Commission of mid-Florida.

Dr. Critchfield joined Florida Power in 1983, serving as both CEO and President during his tenure which ended with his retirement in 1998. He is a past chairman and director of the Florida Council of 100, a former director of Barnett Banks of Florida, Bayfront Life Services, the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Florida Endowment Fund for Higher Education, and former member of the Government Accountability to the People Commission.  Dr. Critchfield played an integral role in bring the Tampa Bay Rays to St. Petersburg.

With an extensive background in education, Dr. Critchfield began his career as a high school history teacher and later served as an administrator, dean, professor and assistant chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh, and as president of Rollins College in Winter Park. Throughout his career, Dr. Critchfield has demonstrated a strong commitment to forging public/private partnerships for the betterment of the community as a whole. He has spearheaded economic development initiatives in Pinellas County, helping bring new businesses to Tampa Bay, thereby adding to the area’s economic strengths by generating quality jobs.
