Six years ago, Valiece Long set a goal to graduate near the top of her class; Goal accomplished. She also wanted to give back to her community (the list is too long to mention here); Goal accomplished. She wants be become a neurosurgeon. While this goal yet to be accomplished, Valiece is well on her way to crossing this item off her list.
Recently, Valiece received a surprise announcement that she is one of five statewide winners of the Leaders 4 Life Fellowship.
A Doorways Scholar, Valiece splits her class time between Clearwater High and dual enrollment classes at St. Petersburg College. While maintaining a 4.42 GPA, she finds time to mentor ESOL students, tutor elementary kids and provide clothing and meals to the homeless.
Valiece and her family have faced many challenges over the years. Her father died three months before her third birthday after a boating accident. Her mom raised five kids. Valiece has known for a long time that her education is the ticket to a better life. Even when she was working a part time job to help out, Valiece would bring along her homework so that she wouldn't fall behind in her classes. This dedication to excellence is not only present academically, but in other areas of her life as well. A talented sprinter, fluent in Spanish and a community activist, Valiece Long is simply amazing.
Recently, Valiece has been named a WINNER of the Take Stock In Children's Inaugural "Leaders 4 Life" Fellowship Program. Congratulations Valiece on all you have accomplished thus far. We trust that there's more great news to follow.
